Great chocolate but less at Safeway

Bought the same box of Russell Stover candy today at Safeway for $10.99! Possibly less if you look around locally.

Way Too Sweet

Russell Stover candies were always good, you could count on them to be fresh and tasty at a reasonable price. I don't know what they've done to them but over the past 5 years or so, they changed a lot. My mom and I always used to buy a box at holidays and special occasions, or any day that we wanted a piece of chocolate candy. We stopped buying them a few years ago when we noticed the decline in quality. They became much too sweet. The texture also changed. The buttercreams were my favorites, and they went from being creamy, smooth and delicious to thick and grainy.I asked my family not to get me any chocolates like this for Valentine's Day this year, but my brother forgot and bought a box each for me and for my mom. I gave it another chance, and, unsurprisingly they were bad. They are like hard lumps of sugar, with softer sugar fillings. I like sweets, but these are so sweet that I couldn't eat more than two pieces. They don't even have the same great flavor they used to have. I tried the buttercreams and of course they were disappointing. The vanilla buttercream had little tough bits in it that had the texture of coconut, which is strange. Years ago, it was smooth and fluffy. One of my relatives came over to visit and tried a couple of pieces. One was so sweet that she started coughing and had to take a sip of coffee.If you remember Russell Stover of years ago and are expecting the same, you will be disappointed. If you want real chocolate candies, try a local chocolatier or some brand that makes better quality candies. It is hard to find nowadays as most mass marketed chocolates are using cheap ingredients. They are not worth eating given how bad they are for you, they don't taste good enough to justify eating them. Sad to see another company go downhill.

They charge between $20-$30 for this box of chocolates, but it turns out to be the same one you get from the drug store for $9.99. It even comes labelled $9.99. Don't let them take you like they took me; unless you are extremely lazy, go buy this at the store!
